Network Documentation
Every network I install is documented.
Every site we install comes with a network diagram showing how the installation is connected and configured.
Example network documentation for a multi-floor installation. Access points, switches, devices, cable connections and network structure are documented in one place.
Why this matters
When something needs to be changed, extended or repaired later, the first thing I open is the network diagram.
Instead of starting from scratch and trying to discover how everything is connected, I can immediately see the structure of the installation.
Depending on the site, the documentation includes things such as:
- Access points and their locations
- Switches and port assignments
- Cable and outlet numbers
- VLANs and network segmentation
- IP networks and important addresses
- Internet and router connections
- NAS, cameras, TVs and other network equipment
- Connections between floors and buildings
Faster support, even years later
If you call because an access point has stopped working, a new device needs connecting or part of the network needs changing, I don't have to guess.
The documentation tells me which access point it is, where its cable terminates, which switch port it uses and which network it belongs to.
That can make troubleshooting considerably faster.
A network that can grow
Good documentation also makes future changes easier.
Adding another access point, camera, office, NAS or network segment doesn't mean rediscovering the existing installation first. We already know what is there and how it fits together.
Part of the installation
Network documentation isn't an optional extra. It's part of how we build networks.
We create and maintain these diagrams for the sites we install so that the network remains understandable and supportable long after installation day.
